Part One: A woman on the street

#1 Part one summary
The main character , Jeanette Walls, is riding in a taxi. She is on the way to a party. While in the taxi, she notices her mother digging through the dumpsters of New York City. She hasn't seen her mom in months, and when she has, she is overcome with panic. She doesn't want her mom to see her and call out her name; she is embarrassed that her mom is homeless. Jeannette starts to feel bad about the way she lives compared to her mother. She has a nice house with hardwood floors, knickknacks, and nice furniture, but she can't enjoy it knowing how her parents live. She has tried to help them, but they won't accept her help; they say they are living how they want to live. She has met with her mom because she knew she would have to eventually and she genuinely wants to help. Jeanette asked her mom how she can help. Her mom replied with something stupid that she doesn't really need. Jeanette's mom insisted that she doesn't need help, but says that Jeanette needs help because Jeanette's values are confused. She thinks Jeanette has it all wrong.
