Part Four: New York City

#13 Jeannette moves to New York
Jeannette arrives in New York and lives with her sister in a woman's hotel in Greenwich Village.  She gets a job working in a fast food restaurant, and eventually moves into an apartment in the Southern Bronx with her sister. Jeannette goes to a public school where she does an internship with Marc Armstrong of The Pheonix Newspaper. Meanwhile, things are getting worse for Brian in Welch, and Brian moves to New York too. After that, Lori tries to get Maureen to move to New York so she can take care of her. Jeannette applies and is accepted to Barnard College.  The siblings begin to live a stable life as a family.  When the siblings remember their past in Welch it makes them laugh.

#14 Parents move to New York
Jeannette's parents move to NYC after Jeannette has lived there for three years.  Her parents lose two apartments, then move in with Jeannette.  They are impossible to live with and Jeannette kicks them out.  They live in a van for awhile, but eventually become homeless.  Jeannette's father gets TB and becomes sober while getting treated.  He gets a job upstate, but leaves the job to be with his wife again.  At Christmas he gives Jeannette the money she needs to stay at Barnard.

#15 Graduation and after
Jeannette graduates from college and marries her long time boyfriend.  She works at a paper.  She is too embarrassed about her parents to let anyone know the truth about them.  When Jeannette's uncle dies, Jeannette discovers that her mother has been land rich for all these years.  Her mother could have avoided the poverty the family endured growing up if only she had paid attention to her assets.

#16 Maureen
Jeannette's brother becomes a cop and Lori becomes an artist.  Maureen's life spirals downward after high school.  She lives with her parents in a squat until her mother kicks her out.  Maureen stabs her mom.  She is arrested, and hospitalized for an assumed mental health condition.  When released from the hospital, she moves to California without saying good bye.  Maureen's departure marks a big change in the family.  Everyone distances from the family. Contact with the parents nearly halts until Jeannette's father calls her saying he is dying.  After his death, Jeannette struggles emotionally, and ends up getting a divorce.
